Winter Family Photography in Dublin: Capturing Festive Memories
As the festive season unfolds, there’s no better time to celebrate your family than with a winter family photoshoot. You can stay wrapped up indoors, cozy and warm, or choose to do your winter family session in a location you love outdoors. Sometimes all you need for a festive atmosphere, is a pop of red (below).
Locations for Cara's, Winter Family Photographer in Dublin Sessions
Dublin offers plenty of scenery to choose from during the winter months. You can go for a beach session or choose a park. Whereas there is less colour in a winter parks, then during some seasons (...spring cherry blossom, anyone?) there is the opportunity for pops of festive colour as you coordinate winter hats, coats and gloves.
If you’re worried about chilly weather, don’t be! Layers can add a stylish touch to your photos. I always encourage families to bring along a warm blanket for snuggling up during outdoor sessions. It not only keeps everyone toasty but also makes for some adorable, intimate shots! Plus, kids love the chance to cuddle up, and those genuine, happy smiles will shine through in your portraits.
Red, green, white, silver and gold will bring an immediate festive atmosphere to any family wardrobe! You can also bring sprigs of holy and mistletoe to your session.
The soft, muted tones of winter, paired with festive touches, provide a magical setting to highlight your family’s warmth and connection. Many families love using winter family portraits for Christmas cards or heartfelt gifts.

Why Winter Light is Perfect for Family Portraits in Dublin.
Family portrait photography is ideal during the winter golden hour, which is 1-2 hours before the sun sets in Ireland. Or, if you're an early riser, I catch the golden morning light too, within a couple of hours of sunrise. As a family photographer in Dublin, I know that winter light has a beautiful, subtle quality that is unique to this time of year. After rain fall, colours in nature can be particularly vibrant. Also in misty, cloudy or generally darker skies, the shadows can be very flattering for some child and family portraits. Low light in general can create flattering, atmospheric portraits.
My Editing Style for Child and Family Portrait Photography Dublin, by Cara.
My editing style brings a soft, warm, vintage-inspired touch to your family photos, complementing the natural winter tones of the Irish landscape. Additionally, Dublin’s low winter light provides the ideal setting for creating more dramatic black-and-white portraits—Classic black & white family photography is often a family favorite, cherished for their timeless feel.
My Relaxed (and Fun) Approach to Family Photography
I like my family portrait sessions to include a mix of traditional family portraits like this one below. Here is a group family portrait of grandparents, parents, children and grandchildren. I might give a few prompts here and there so family members interact with each other rather than always gazing right at me or into the camera.
Family photography with small children can be unpredictable—and that’s where the magic lies! I embrace the unexpected to capture genuine moments of love and connection. Whether it’s a sleepy baby nestled on a parent’s shoulder, siblings sharing a hug, or little ones exploring their surroundings, these moments create the most cherished memories. This little girl dancing in front of a backdrop of fir trees was taken this Autumn when the weather was still very mild here in Dublin.
This session (below) was taken in Killiney Hill woods in Dublin for Christmas family portraits.
Three cousins laughing together in their winter warmers as they perch on a rock overlooking the sea, the wind making their hair fly. I am a big fan of hair blowing in the wind for my child portraits!

I use a professional printers in Dublin to print my own favorite pictures of my own children as well as for the families I photograph. The mat Giclee pigment printing brings beautiful, accurate colour and texture, giving pictures a life of their own.
