Outdoor Family Photo shoot Dublin: Sandycove & The Forty Foot.

UPDATED POST.

Dublin's coastal scenery offer a picturesque backdrop for any outdoor family photo shoot.

The iconic beaches and coastal landmarks, such as Sandycove, the Forty Foot & Howth village on Dublin's North side of Dublin, provide a unique blend of natural beauty and rich history, making them ideal locations for capturing timeless family moments.

Below, a recent outdoor maternity photo shoot with baby girl at The Forty Foot.

As one of Dublin's best family photographers I love to capture spontaneous gestures, such as here where little baby's hands look like he is grasping at mum's pregnancy bump. Doesn't mum look stunning in her long flowing white dress? See more on my brand new Maternity Page.

Here's another picture from our maternity beach photo shoot Dublin. I love this couples kiss as dad holds baby right in the middle of the swimmers' changing area at The Forty Foot. Whenever I do an engagement or couples shoot, I love to focus on the bond between the couple, and maternity is no exception. The backdrop to any family or lifestyle photo shoot is always so important as well.

Although a blurred background (bokeh) is often ideal, in order to focus on the family, it can often be a good idea to include some background elements to set the stage as well!

This couple and their baby then moved to Sandycove beach for more maternity pictures on the sandy beach. (below). This beach offered views across Dublin.

The interplay of natural elements and the family's genuine interactions resulted in a collection of heartfelt and memorable images.

Authentic Family Photography in Howth Village Dublin

Another recent family photography Dublin session with this family in Howth Village Dublin. I had wanted to do a session in Howth for some time. There are so many interesting backdrops in Howth - fishing boats around the pier, the pier and lighthouse, the atmospheric seafood restaurant & pubs that line the pier, the nearby beaches. Even on a rainy day there is shelter in the way of all the old-world pubs along the Pier. On this day, it had only just stopped raining. In a window of opportunity, it was great to capture this family overlooking the colorful fishing boats.

After making the most of the fishing boats as a background, we moved to the beach for a typical beach style family photography session.

When I am taking family portraits, I love to introduce movement and gesture by framing the family so they are interacting close together in a very emotive way.

Here is one more (below) with dad teaking his daughter's nose in affection in front of the fishing boats again. It is so important to capture these moments as they arise spontaneously.

As well as more traditional "eyes on me" beach family portraits, I love to create interesting compositions with gesture. For instance here below, i like how this girl's arm swinging as she scrambles across rocks creates a frame for her mum and little sister hugging on a rock.

Family Photo Shoot at Sandycove & The Forty Foot Dublin

I was thrilled about this particular photo shoot with this family at Sandycove & The Forty Foot. With mum, dad, lovely mother in law and two 4 year old busy boys!

This was a holiday photo shoot in Dublin with the family visiting from America and staying with Irish relatives here in Dublin. I can't wait to showcase all the best moments on the Recent Photo shoot Stories page

I am also excited to introduce a new documentary family photo shoot that will span 1 hour and 20 minutes - 2 hours. It will include a leisurely walk through some of South County Dublin's most iconic landmarks, including Sandycove & The Forty Foot, ending in Glasthule at the Baker Street Bakers for pastries, coffee, or hot chocolate for the kids in the colder months. Additionally, there will be the option to stroll along Dunlaoghaire's East pier or West pier ,with the possibility to end at Scrumdiddly's for ice-cream (best enjoyed in summer!).

On this particular week day, the weather was cloudy - but cloudy weather can produce such beautiful colors. When the family photography session is scheduled for mid day or earlier in the day, cloudy weather can be preferable over intense sunlight!

This particular outdoor family photo shoot was an hour so I wanted to make sure I had plenty of options for pictures of all the family interacting together! I love the pop of colors from the hats, coats & trainers. In my winter & Christmas family sessions, pops of color from winter clothes can work so well (Killliney Hill Christmas photo shoot).

You can see what to wear here in Frequently asked questions & also here in: family photo shoot: what to wear?

I also wanted to capture sweet moments walking between Sandy Cove to the Forty Foot. This is the moment a happy, excited little boy jumped down the steps to the Forty Foot, holding daddy's hands.

As well as faces, I enjoyed shooting the backs of this family as they gazed at the deep, churning blue water!

Cold water swimming is a very popular pass time in Dublin with swimmers braving the cold temperatures all year round. (Dublin cold water swim spots)

Having bathers in the background of some of these family portraits in softer focus, gives a sense of place and atmospheric quality to the pictures. It is especially important to consider background elements for vacation or holiday outdoor family photo shoots Dublin. After all, the gallery of pictures ideally need to tell the story of Dublin as well as your family!

Sea View

It is important to shoot from as many angles as possible. Here shooting downwards to capture dad holding his son overlooking steps and the sea. It is a fine line between staying safely away from the waves and getting as close as possible to include the water!

I also wanted to capture individual moments with the boys, more intimate & natural child portraits. Spontaneous emotions and gestures are the BEST to capture. I love simple moments of connection, as simple as you squeezing together in the frame!

Joy

I love how little boy's hands are reaching across mum's face in this candid expression of busy, sometimes chaotic motherhood with kids (below). Little children are very active and it's important to shoot quickly to get enough shots to choose from. It is hard to have everyone looking at the camera, so authentic, natural & unfussy compositions are the way to go!
