I love to shoot in half-dark when possible (aka low light is my fave). When the light isn't too bright it can be very flattering for family portraits. That's also why if there is a family session Dublin in the middle of the day, I will often seek the shade of a tree or a building. The colors also end of up being rich, natural & deep when there is more shade.
I've updated this post to include some recent family portraits Dublin which are taken under the shade of trees. The canopy providing some relief from intense midday sun.
In this case, the sunlight is so intense at midday that this girl's communion dress is covered in light & shade. Sometimes it is best to embrace the dramatic effects of harsh summer light.
(Below). This Stourhead, England woodland outing (below) with my own family a few years ago, brings back wonderful memories of childhood unplugged. By unplugged I mean when the summer holidays come, school's out for summer, and the children roam free! We go on outings together & I bring my camera along!!

The girls had Ariel Mermaid dresses on complete with orange wigs that were discarded at some point as they got so tangled! Just children being children.
Using props from the holiday outing to give a storytelling aspect to these simple family portraits. Leaves, grapes, apples from the picnic. Using the backdrop of tree bark and flowers for simple, fuss free but classic & natural child portraits.
